Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Can you believe how quickly the 60-day legislative session is flying by? We’re already through the fifth week of the 60-day legislative session, with just four weeks left until it wraps up!

You’re invited! 8th Legislative District Virtual Town Hall

To ensure you’re kept in the loop about everything happening at the state capitol — including which bills are being approved or rejected and where they stand in the process — I’d like to invite you to our upcoming 8th Legislative District Virtual Town Hall.

Sen. Matt Boehnke, Rep. April Connors, and I will host this Zoom-based virtual event. We’re committed to keeping you informed about our activities and making it easier for you to engage with state government and our community. Virtual town halls are a fantastic opportunity for our neighbors in the Tri-Cities area to connect with us and get the real scoop on what’s happening in Olympia.

That’s why we’ve scheduled this virtual town hall meeting for Saturday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. During this one-hour virtual event, we’ll be all ears, ready to listen to your comments, answer your questions, and delve into issues related to the 2024 session. Don’t miss out — be sure to register today! I’m eagerly looking forward to chatting with you.

Legislative deadlines

What do legislative deadlines mean for us? They act as important markers along the legislative journey. Our next deadline is Tuesday, February 13, the last opportunity for bills to receive approval in the chamber where they originated, house of origin cutoff.

From now until that deadline on Feb. 13, lawmakers in both the House and Senate Chambers will be hard at work deliberating and voting on various bills. Make sure to stay tuned for my next update, where I’ll discuss the bills that have successfully made it past these deadlines and outline what lies ahead in the legislative process.

House overwhelmingly supports my clean nuclear energy manufacturing bill

I’m thrilled to share the news that my bill aimed at expanding clean energy manufacturing and creating new family-wage jobs has received overwhelming support from the House of Representatives!

This bill is a game-changer. It extends a property tax exemption incentive to encourage the development of new clean energy manufacturing, which means more job opportunities for our communities. It reaffirms our commitment to expanding clean nuclear energy and addresses the unique challenges nuclear manufacturing facilities face.

Building on the success of HB 1386 from 2022, which granted property tax exemptions to manufacturers in targeted urban areas, HB 2120 takes things a step further by expanding support for clean energy manufacturers across the board. It specifically tackles the hurdles presented by lengthy reviews from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, giving nuclear manufacturing facilities the time they need to meet the criteria for tax preferences.

This bill showcases Washington’s leadership in clean energy innovation. By investing in clean nuclear energy, we’re boosting economic growth and paving the way for a brighter and more abundant energy future in our state. With its resounding approval by the House Finance Committee and subsequent passage by the full House with an impressive vote of 94 – 1, HB 2120 now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
