Legislative update: Wins for veterans, energy, and parental rights at risk
Rep. Stephanie Barnard, R-Pasco, shares a legislative update from Olympia. Several bills have passed the House, including four she sponsored: House Bill 1106 to expand tax relief for veterans, House Bill 1819 to strengthen Washington’s energy grid, House Bill 1210 to boost nuclear energy jobs in the Tri-Cities, and House Bill 1824 to cut red tape for birthing centers.
However, some concerning proposals are also moving forward. House Bill 1296 would weaken parental rights in education by rolling back Initiative 2081. House Bill 1409 seeks to expand the clean fuels program, increasing fuel costs. House Bill 1531 would override local public health decisions without clear guidelines.
These bills now head to the Senate, where they can still be amended or stopped. Public engagement is critical. Visit https://leg.wa.gov to track legislation and submit testimony. For questions, call 360-786-7986.
