Rep. Stephanie Barnard’s bill to expand property tax relief for disabled veterans approved unanimously by the House
The Washington State House of Representatives unanimously passed a measure sponsored by Rep. Stephanie Barnard, R-Pasco, to expand property tax relief for disabled veterans. House Bill 1106 would lower the disability rating requirement, allowing more veterans to qualify for tax relief and receive the financial support they have earned because of their service.
“This is a major win for Washington’s veterans,” Barnard said. “Unanimous support shows that both parties recognize the importance of providing meaningful tax relief to those who served. I look forward to working with the Senate to get this bill across the finish line.”
Although the original version of House Bill 1106 proposed gradually lowering the disability rating threshold to 20%, an amendment introduced by the majority party removed that final reduction, keeping the minimum eligibility at 40% beyond 2027.
“This remains a strong, bipartisan bill that would provide meaningful property tax relief for our disabled veterans,” Barnard said. “Even with the amended change, we are expanding eligibility and ensuring more veterans receive the support they deserve while keeping the program sustainable for the future.”
Under current law, only veterans with an 80% or higher service-connected disability rating qualify for the senior citizens, disabled individuals, and qualifying veterans’ property tax exemption. As passed by the House, HB 1106 lowers that threshold to 60% in 2026 and 40% in 2027.
HB 1106 now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
